Thermal Auricular Therapy
Today ear candling is offered by many natural healthcare practitioners and in addition many GPs are now referring patients as a gentler alternative to ear syringing.
It dates back to ancient times across different lands. Scroll paintings show pictures of them can be found from hundreds of years ago.
Balance and hearing are the two main functions of the ears. So attuning greater attention to these sensory organs facilitates a sense of wellbeing.
The candles are not candles in the traditional sense - they are hollow tubes made from natural material of cotton, beeswax and either flax or hemp. Some also have essential oils added to accentuate the experience.
The treatment lasts for up to 45 minutes. A short consultation is taken ahead of the treatment to ensure it is appropriate for you. You then lie on one side to access each ear one at a time allowing the candle to be placed safely into the outer ear. Depending on the health of your ear, the candle takes between 8 to 12 minutes to burn down. You may hear gentle popping as pressure releases from the ear. The ingredients of the candle vaporise and circulate around the outer ear promoting the release of excessive ear wax.
Do note that the residue found in the candle after the treatment is residue from the candle itself and not actually from your ear which is a common misunderstanding. The heat and steam will indeed loosen the ear wax and over the course of 24 to 48 hours will gently ease its way out.
All four sinuses benefit too from the heat and steam circulating which also reaches the whole of the respiratory tract allowing a calming and soothing effect on the whole body and mind.
The treatment is finished with a relaxing face massage to enhance its effects. No oils are used in the massage and you remain fully clothed.
For impacted wax weekly treatments are recommended until clearance. This is also a wonderful treatment for stress relief so can be called upon in those hectic times.
