Thermal Auricular Therapy
Today ear candling is offered by many natural healthcare practitioners and in addition many GPs are now referring patients as a gentler alternative to ear syringing.
It dates back to ancient times across different lands. Scroll paintings show pictures of them can be found from hundreds of years ago.
Balance and hearing are the two main functions of the ears. So, attuning greater attention to these sensory organs facilitates a sense of wellbeing.
The Biosun candles used are made from cotton sprayed with beeswax, honey extract and sage, St. john’s Wort, Chamomile and Beta-Carotene. They have a filter in them to prevent any ash debris or excessive herbal powder entering the ear canal.
The treatment lasts for up to 45 minutes. A short consultation is taken ahead of the treatment to ensure it is appropriate for you. You then lie on one side to access each ear one at a time allowing the candle to be placed safely into the outer ear. Depending on the health of your ear, the candle takes between 10 to 15 minutes to burn down. You may hear gentle popping as pressure releases from the ear. The ingredients of the candle vaporise and circulate around the outer ear promoting the release of excessive ear wax.
Prior to candling you must refrain from using ear drops for at least 24 hours and if starting antibiotics again wait 24 hours before having a treatment.
Both ears should be treated in the same session.
The rising air through the column of the candle and gentle natural movement of the flame serve to gently massage the ear drum. This has an immediate subjective effect of regulating ear pressure. Users often describe a soothing, light sensation in the ear/head area and a general calming, relaxing effect.
It is often used by people with:
- Glue ear
- Hayfever and rhinitis
- Excessive ear wax
- Tension headaches
- Flying problems and pressure regulation
Please note: This is not suitable for people with perforated ear, grommets, cochlear implants, an active ear infection, allergic to any of the constituents of the candle, severe dental work such as root canal work, epileptics and the first three months of pregnancy.
Do note that the residue found in the candle after the treatment is residue from the candle itself and not actually from your ear which is a common misunderstanding. The heat and steam will indeed loosen the ear wax and over the course of 24 to 48 hours will gently ease its way out.
You remain fully dressed for this treatment.
As part of the treatment you will also receive a facial draining massage which will continue the draining process and promotes further relaxation.
For impacted wax, weekly treatments are recommended until clearance. This is also a wonderful treatment for stress relief so can be called upon in those hectic times.
This treatment is offered by Mayumi, who is happy to combine Ear Candling with Auricular Reflexology or Indian Head Massage for a 60 minute relaxing and therapeutic treatment, for £65.
